As much as most of us I like to think are fond of cats, taking care of them is quite a hassle! And of the many aspects of taking care of a pet cat, dealing with them while they’re in the heat is arguably the most difficult thing you can do. So needless to say, because female cats are prone to becoming pregnant at this time, it’s vital that you make sure this does not happen, particularly if your cat is still a very young kitten.
So the question beckons answering; how to prevent your cat from getting pregnant? Well, we’ll be going over all the things you can do so if you’re in a bit of a pickle with your cat, know that I’ve got you covered!
So first things first, you have a situation where you have cats of both sexes and they’re awfully fond of each other. If in that situation, unwanted pregnancies can create complications,. You’ll have to find a way to keep them separated until you find a more long-term solution.
This could mean a number of things. The easiest is to keep one of them locked to a certain part of the house such as a room. Do whatever it takes to make the room inaccessible for the male, for example, to make sure the female is kept protected in the locked room. It’s less effort and the female is usually the one in need of protection so it’s better to keep her locked up safe.
However, it’s always an option to keep both of them restricted to different parts of the house, for example, in different floors of the house and keeping a mechanism to make it difficult to go from one floor to the other. This way is a lot more work though and doesn’t give any cat much freedom to move so expect to have a lot of trouble with this for sure!

Now, if you only have the one cat and it’s female, your job is much easier! Just keep your house shut out completely, rendering it impossible for anything without fingers to leave. It’ll have the entirety of the house to pace around when it’s in heat and it’ll be quite a bit more difficult to come across random cats without leaving the house!
The aforementioned things would be things you’d need to most likely do if you still wanted your cat to give birth to some cute little kittens somewhere down the line but wanted to avoid anything of the sort for the moment. However, if you don’t think you want any more cats to deal with, you can move to a more permanent solution. It’s so much easier than trying to keep it trapped and after the procedure is done, you’ll be worry free forever. Win-win every way pretty much if you don’t want to put up with a litter of kitten!
What are these solutions? Of course, neutering and spraying; of course, that’s also dependent on the composition of your cat family! These procedures are primarily the removal or stunting of the reproductive organs of the cats and these procedures are not only going to prevent the reproductive capacities of your cats, but they’ll also help control the hormonal impulses of your feline friends.
You’ll primarily need to spray your female cat more than anything, given that they’re the most susceptible to complications from pregnancies. No, it isn’t actually spraying anything on your cat! Spraying is the term used to describe the removal of the uterus and the ovaries of the female kitty and needless to say, not having a set of ovaries will make it quite a bit more difficult to get pregnant I think! This procedure is the most straightforward way to prevent pregnancies and will protect your cat the best way.
If you want your female kitty to be able to bear kittens but say, you have a male cat that is a bit too eager to get those kittens out. Neutering him is a good way to keep your female’s ovaries intact while making sure there isn’t an undesirable accident.
Sure, the process is a bit complicated and for both procedures, you’ll need to book surgery with a vet and that’s a whole lot of bookings and all to make but if sterilization is the best permanent method, it’s worth it for most use cases, isn’t it?
The last thing that you can do is opt for something very unconventional; hormonal therapy. It’s also not something usually recommended and of course, messing with hormones isn’t usually any good to begin with! But if all the alternatives listed here are not options to your taste, then this might be something that you ought to consider.
For this, you need to visit your vet to artificially inject some hormones, namely estrogen and prostaglandin into your Kitty’s system in order to alter the heat cycles.
Administering these hormonal drugs will pretty much neutralize heat cycles of your feline and in this process, make sure she isn’t up to any shenanigans that lead to some unwanted kitty litters (get it?!). Do make sure that it’s always administered by your vet and not something you try to figure by yourself because dosage requirements can change and can be different depending on a number of factors, including species, age, size, etc.
So with all this, you should be somewhat well equipped to know all the different things you can do to make sure your kitty doesn’t get pregnant or one gets the other pregnant by the same token!
You just have to have some idea of what you want for your cat and what is feasible for you to do in order to keep your cat healthy.
Therefore, choose the best one for you and make sure that you understand the consequences. Especially if you consider the permanent solutions, you’ll want to give it a good, hard thought before going through with it.
